One of the absolute MUST-visit-on-a-regular-basis websites is Forgotten-NY. Kevin Walsh has been documenting the remnants of New York City’s past for almost 9 years now (since March ‘99). From surviving examples of old architecture, turn of the century light posts still in use, hidden alleys and other ‘forgotten’ nuggets of NY’s history, hiding in plain sight. There are plenty of sites that detail NYC’s history, but no others (that I know of) that will remind you that history is often no farther away than your daily commute, hidden below a century of municpal paint.

Of course, with near a decade of accumulated content, visiting the site for the first time can be somewhat overwhelming, but here are a couple of my favorite parts to start you off:
